Chair rushing and caning

22 Jun 13 30 Jun 13 9 of 9 School of Stuff studio 330.00

Course in chair rushing and caning taught across two weekends, so four days in total. We will teach both techniques, so you can concentrate on one, and get a whole chair done across the two weekends, or you can have a go at both (but you might have to finish your chair or stool at home). You can learn how to re-rush a traditional wooden seat using wetland rushes from East Anglia.  This is an ancient craft technique which produces an attractive, durable and sweet-smelling rustic seat. It is not as time-consuming, but also not as fancy, as caning with rattan, which was an ancient Asian technique, discovered by Europeans in the 16th century.  You can learn how to recane a dining chair with this elegant and resilient type of seating. You can bring your own chair frame or we can provide one, and you should be able to complete an entire seat by either technique in four days. The price for the course includes rush and rattan.  Teaching hours are 10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Deconstruct/Reconstruct

Drawing inspiration from Martin Gamper's '100 chairs in 100 days in 100 ways', in this two day weekend session we are taking apart furniture and other found bits and pieces, and reconfiguring them into new functional or sculptural forms, using whatever skills and techniques we need.  Design is an important element in this project. The parameters of the project are that it needs to be achievable in two days, using mostly woodworking equipment and it should re-use existing components.  The rest is up to you. Maximum 8 students. If you are interested in this session you will need to start scouting for materials now! Some hand skills would be useful, but we can teach you what you need to know.
